Salento

“Kalòs ìrtate stin Grecìa Salentina” will welcome visitors at the entrance of towns and villages where Greek was spoken up until not too long ago: Calimera, Carpignano Salentino, Castrignano dei Greci, Corigliano d’Otranto, Cutrofiano, Martano, Martignano, Melpignano, Soleto, Sternatia and Zollino. Places that still breathe the atmosphere of the middle ages and Far Eastern influences.

Worthwhile visiting are the church-monasteries (Monastery of the Augustinian Friars in Melpignano), the majestic castles (Corigliano d’Otranto), the bell towers (a magnificent example is the Guglia Orsini in Soleto), and the many houses with courtyards (the expression of the philosophical concept of chora), the large public water tanks, called pozzelle, and the numerous noble palaces.
